New Keel
« on: January 20, 2016, 07:56 PM »
Itís rainy and not much catching going on, so I decided to do another mod to my old Prowler. I noticed a while back that in a side wind the Prowlerís hull slips sideways and it is very hard to get to turn into the wind. After paddling only on the leeward side, I was finally able to negotiate a turn into Spoonerís. It was a bit scary.

I considered a rudder but there are too many moving parts to wear out and there are holes drilled through the hull for cables to run through, which allow water intrusion. Furthermore, because of the amount of stuff I have accumulated, I can only store this hull in an upright position standing on itís tail.

The Prowler in storage

So, I decided to add a keel shaped from surfboard foam.

The keel after shaping.

Masked and sanded

Cutting the cloth

After resin is added to the glass on the keel

This is the  finished keel

Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but will soon.

Becoming a better waterman and kayaker should be more of a target to focus on than catching fish. The fish will always be around, but will you?

I've seen this keel right before the paint job & it looked sick. Way to go Zodi.

Awesome, Yeah not sure why more companies are not making that section replaceable.

They have started trying to make a little piece replaceable. But not completely and a good 1.5ft would be nice to replace annually or even every 2 years depending on frequency of use.
