4th annual Estero Kayak Challenge
« on: January 24, 2018, 11:57 AM »
Updated on 2/26/18

Registration is now open at this link https://ianglertournament.com/4th-annual-estero-kayak-challenge

We liked the ease of use with the iAngler app at last years Slam Down because of that and for continuity, so everyone doesn't have to learn a whole other tournament system we are using iAngler for the Estero tournament. The $5 iAngler app fee is included in registration as is the cost of the tournament shirt.

I haven't looked at the camping recently but if you plan to camp I would get those sites booked soon. Let me know if you have questions. We're looking forward to seeing a bunch of you there!

Update 1/24/18

#1 - Estero is now a qualifier event for the Cal-Salt Tournament of Champions, but otherwise has not changed. Same format, same rules, and still benefits our local chapter of Heroes on the Water.

#2 - last year we thought we had found a new “permanent” location to hold the event but due to costs we incurred, we can not use that location in the future. So, we said, cool let’s just move it to Spooners at MDO with camping there. It’ll be great! Problem, State Parks has a 50 person limit at Spooners for special events and we are over that limit. Here’s where we are now...

Estero will now be held at Leffingwell in Cambria with camping at San Simeon. They have a 100 person limit there and we will just keep the event capped at 100 if we ever hit that number. While not technically located in the Estero Bay it is pretty much all we are left with since State Parks owns virtually all of our local launch spots. I’m personally excited about this move and we plan to hold the event there as long as State Parks will let us.

#3 - the Tournament will be on June 2 and I hope to have registration open in the next couple of weeks.

If you plan to camp you may want to book soon. They have changed the reservation website and it pretty much sucks so good luck with that. Hope to see a ton of you there this. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks!

Nope, the whole event is moving to Leffingwell. The fishing will happen there. The Estero tournament won't be in the Estero Bay anymore.

We debated changing the name but at this point it is somewhat known and the tournament sponsors know it by that name and its history and growth. I don't want to lose that because that helps us secure donations, etc. The other thought is that people outside of our area don't know what the Estero Bay is anyway and actually most locals don't really even know what it is either.

As it stands right now fishing will be 100% out of Leffingwell but we are discussing whether to open it up to San Simeon also. Does anyone have an opinion on that? Anyone really want San Simeon to be available? Let us know soon, because I would like to open registration for Estero by March or soon after the start of the Cal-Salt Series.

Thanks for the question, Jesse.

Sounds like there is interest in San Simeon. I’ll get with the other guys but we’ll most likely include it.

As I think about it more it may be cooler to have every one launch and land out of the same spot. More camaraderie.

Not trying to complain-- takes a lot of selfless work to do these tourneys -- I agree with the dude who said there is more camaraderie and a better atmosphere  when launching from few or one location.   It also makes it harder for people to try and pull shenanigans.

I think even if we allowed San Simeon the majority will still fish at Leff. Those would be the only two launches approved.

Personally, I think(?) San Simeon should be included but...the place can be sketchy at launch or at beaching. I would fish there depending on the conditions just before tournament day. Launching at a low tide might be OK(?), but 6 hours later when the tide comes back in, and the wind kicks up, you could be in for some troubles...just sayin'...  ;D

Anyways, looking forward to this excellent tournament on the Central Coast.  :)

PS. What happened to the motocons?

Becoming a better waterman and kayaker should be more of a target to focus on than catching fish. The fish will always be around, but will you?
