Title: 2014 Kayak Fisherman of the Year Suggestions.... E.I. AOTY...
Post by: RHYAK on October 31, 2013, 06:04 PM
Taking suggestions till the 15th, speak now or forever hold your piece...

Try and make it so that a really nice fish 200 points, some species obviously are not tested yet and still needs to be done, which will grow with time, also thinking of adding a few additional species to the list for the So-Cal crowd and also another for the Bay guys.

Tight Lines and feel free to PM me at any time.

Ryan

Spotted bass, barracuda, perch, and greenling s/b worth .5 less pts. Add sturgeon, pacbutts, and yt.
I like the species of the month idea too (Jan = trout, Feb = perch, Mar = LMB, April = panfish, May = rockfish, June = cabezon, July = halibut, Aug = salmon, Sept = catfish, Oct = wsb, Nov = lingcod, Dec = ?) Open to everybody who posts a report. With the species predetermined at the beginning of the year.

I like the species of the month as well,  maybe have some sort of flat rate bonus point value for logging a sppecies of the month fish.  Was going to sign up this year anyway, sothe top prize just makes it even more interesting.  Thanks for making it happen.

Dan we won't worry about you next year. You'll be baby sitting. And be lucky to get out as much as I have this year. I been so busy working. But I just got another project I think I may like. I have to find a way to keep some pigs out of this woman's place on Interlake road. I'm thinking 22-250. Depends on size. So I'm going to enter a HOG

AS far a fish of the month, I have a question. Will that mean in a certain month, that there are bonus points for that fish of the month? Or is that the only time that fish counts?

Yeah it would be hard to have just one fish a month count. Would be cool if other fish count for certain smaller points and the fish of the month is --- points x2
Title: Re: 2014 Kayak Fisherman of the Year Suggestions.... E.I. AOTY...
Post by: Sin Coast on November 06, 2013, 12:09 PM
I think you can still catch & enter whatever fish you want each month.
But there will be a separate contest for the biggest pre-determined species each month. So if July is salmon, then whoever catches the biggest salmon in July wins a small prize or something. It sounds like the species of the month thing is independent of KFY...and open to anybody on CCKF who posts a report. Seems like a good idea to me.

Sweet! I saw the new scoring in another post. Looks like we added Pacific Halibut, Sturgeon, Yellowtail, and separated Crappies from other Panfish. (btw the scoring scale should probably say Panfish instead of Sunfish bcuz LMB is technically a sunfish)
Were there any other changes?

Scoring Scale for 2014
Lingcod = 5.5 points per inch
Rockcod = 8 points per inch
California Halibut = 5 points per inch
Salmon = 5 points per inch
Cabezon = 8 points per inch
White Seabass = 4 points per inch
Barracuda = 5 points per inch
Surf Perch = 13 points per inch
Flounder = 10 points per inch
Greenling = 12 points per inch
Calico Bass = 8 points per inch
Sand Bass= 8 points per inch
Sheepshead = 8 points per inch
Largemouth Bass = 8.5 points per inch
Smallmouth Bass = 10 points per inch
Spotted Bass= 10 points per inch
White Bass= 13 points per inch
Striped Bass = 6 points per inch
Catfish = 6 points per inch
Crappie = 12.5 points per inch
Trout = 8 points per inch
Kokanee = 11 points per inch
Steelhead = 6 points per inch
Pacific Halibut = 4 points per inch
Sunfish= 16 points per inch
Yellowtail = 5 points per inch

It's open to all Kayak anglers in the state and the only tournament that doesn't set county boarders on where you can and can not fish.

Well if you don't want boundaries. We can do that but an alaskan halibut and Salmon. An Idaho Lake trout could take most of it. but wouldn't be fair to those who are not able to travel.

Pretty sure Derrick is not talking about any guys on here lots of other online events have county boundary, north of point A, or only LA, Ventura and Santa Barbara line. Makes it no good for guys that don't fish that area all that often or even only spend 50% of there time in those zones.

Some guys are not into online tournaments, that's fine with me it's there for those that like it.

Ryan when you get a chance please list which  species for AOTY will require a fork measurement.  Thanks man

All fish nose to tail.

2. Photographs with a digital camera providing evidence of the fish size with total length of fish taken in the center of the fish in the first picture and then a close up of the tail section must be provided at a minimum. The fish should not be stretched, bent, or manipulated in any way to enhance the fish length. The fish should also be in as natural lay position, mouth must be closed and against the 0 or other even number, and whole fish visible in at least one of the photos. If there is no picture provided with the whole fish against a measuring devise then the fish will be disqualified.

The rules are pretty simple.

Hea asking because sturgeon are messured by the dfg as a fork length. So legality vers compition isnt a bad question

I didn't say it was a bad question. I am just refering to the current rules which dictate the measurment is to be taken from the nose to the tip of the tail of every fish. As long as it is over 40 inches it counts, but fish over 60 count as well because this is a catch photo release contest and does not follow DFW rules because the fish may be immedieatly released.

If Ryan intends the fork measurment to be what is scored in this tournement the rules need to be changed.
Title: Re: 2014 Kayak Fisherman of the Year Suggestions.... E.I. AOTY...
Post by: Derrick A2H on December 31, 2013, 12:25 PM
Also states it has to be a fish of legal length lol

7. No out off season or undersize may be entered. All local water rules must be followed at all times. Including proper measuring of fish per DFG. Fork Length.
Title: Re: 2014 Kayak Fisherman of the Year Suggestions.... E.I. AOTY...
Post by: Dogpound on December 31, 2013, 12:32 PM
, dfg has a bonito and sturgeon as examples needing fork measurement , versus to longest point on tail for other species.Aoty rules also state all dfg rules apply including fork length measuring, so just wanted to clarify which species are considered fork tail.  I got sturgeon  and pretty sure yellowtail. I interpreted that to mean that there would be two different ways to determine length based on species type for the contest.
Title: Re: 2014 Kayak Fisherman of the Year Suggestions.... E.I. AOTY...
Post by: Impractical Fishermen on December 31, 2013, 12:37 PM
just saying the rule reads "total length," and not legal measurment.

So to me that means the contest is a total length contest until otherwise notified, however, the contest does not condone poaching, so follow all DFW rules.
Title: Re: 2014 Kayak Fisherman of the Year Suggestions.... E.I. AOTY...
Post by: Dogpound on December 31, 2013, 01:40 PM
This discussion is why I asked for a clarification,  rule 2 says a picture of total length and picture example shows nose to longest point of tail, rule 7 says all local water rules apply, including dfg fork measuring rules. Picture example shows dfg example for proper fork measurement for fork tail species.  All DFW rules must be followed so here is where than can be misunderstandings.  A fork tailed fish that is legal  by total length but not by fork length measure would be an illegal fish  according to DFW,therefore inadmissable.how would A fish of legal size by fork measurement be scored ? based on the fork measurement or total length.

Dogpound is right about the rule not being clear, but as far as I see it the regulation does not matter for the contest as long as you are within the state's rules. The measurement used to tell if a fish is of legal length and the measurment used in a fishing contest are two seperate things. If the rule was to measure the the alternate length, we would measure from the dorsal to the tail.

It is on the scoreboard thread at the bottom of the scoreboard.

that is all I was looking for, sturgeon and yellowtail measured as shown on the rules thread for fork fin species all others nose to longest point of tail, any thing with a slot limit must fall into the slot to be admissable.

Derrick when there is a $1000 prize on the line the rules had better be straight forward or Ryan is asking for trouble. People lose their shit over bragging rights let alone a prize of any kind. The fact is it does matter and needs to be sorted out before there are any problems which is why I am glad dogpound pointed it out.

The no over slot fish and other measurement rules need to be posted in black and white. I bet if someone catches a sturgeon over 60" and posts it for points would be pissed if they followed the fishing regulations and were DQ'd due to how someone interpenetrates a rule.

Think the rules are pretty strait forward. FOLLOW DFG RULES does it need to be in a larger font. Do I also have to say no green sturgeon. OHH yeah barbless hooks only. Follow rules on how to measure said fish per DFG and how they would measure for a legal fish. If someone wants to submit a 70 inch sturgeon, DFG might just be looking and well you broke a LAW. Do I have to say no Coho Salmon. Follow rules...

Sorry guys, not trying to be a dick, but why even try and say the rules are not strait forward.

Good luck guys.

Andy sound like you have been able to figure it out with a few guys help. Good luck hope to see some big fish from you.

I am not trying to be a dick either. The rules are straight forward in that they say total length. It raised a question from at least one person and that should make it worth looking into. Your site, your contest, your rules.

I just read the new flier and it makes sense to me now.

"Any white sturgeon greater than 68 inches fork length may not be removed from the water and shall be released immediately. (CCR, Title 14, Sec. 5.80 and 27.90)"

So close fish are allowed to be measured but fish that are noticeably over the slot may be protected form handling and exposure.

Yes, I think the rules were pretty straight forward as well, my question was simply what species in Aoty are considered fork tailed to make sure I measured according to rules as posted if I caught a fork tailed fish..  We did figure it out.

sounds good, and ill switch it around today since there are people out there would want to measure not by DFG rules for extra length, but for the record it states fork length for fish that require it, in rule number 7.

I'm trying to be a dick. Always.
Hahaha just kidding. I just think it's funny when someone says "I'm not TRYING to be a dick."  :D

Good call on the fork length issue. With sturgeon and yt we don't have the option of going by either total length OR fork length. We must measure by fork length for these 2 species.

Comparing last year's scoring scale versus this year's...here are the differences I see.
Cali Halibut: down .5pt
Surf Perch: down 1pt
Greenling: down 1pt
Smallmouth Bass: down .5pt
Spotted Bass: down .5pt
Catfish: down .5pt

Crappie have been separated from Panfish (Crappie down .5pt and Panfish up 3pts)
New species include: Pacific Halibut, Yellowtail, Sturgeon.
