Kayak Fisherman of the Year
« on: November 14, 2011, 07:39 PM »
Hey guys looking to see interest in a year long Tournament more for bragging rights then anything else and maybe a few donations will be made though out the year to the winners of this hoping maybe we can get a shop or a kayak company to donate a kayak but as of now for the first year of this it will be simple.

What do you guys think???

Here is the idea its been done before on a couple other site just recreating the wheel kinda added a few species and adjusted points around.

1. All fish entered must be caught (i.e. hooked, fought, and landed) from a kayak in
the state of California, without the aid of a powerboat and using methods deemed legal by the state of California.

2. Photographic evidence of fish size with total length of fish must be provided.

3. Fish caught prior to January 1, 2012 are ineligible. Fish caught prior to payment
of entry fees are also ineligible.

4. The pool covers the following 20 species Lingcod, Rockfish, Halibut, Salmon
Cabezon, White Seabass, Barracuda, Surf Perch, Flounders, Greenling, Calico  Bass, Sand Bass, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Spotted Bass, White Bass, Striped Bass, Catfish, Panfish, Trout.

5. No out off season or undersize may be entered. All local water rules must be
followed at all times.

6. Entries must be posted within 10 days of being caught and photographed. No
"hoarding" of entries.

7. Please refer to California DFG handbook for what qualifies for each species.

Scoring Scale

Lingcod = 5 points per inch
Rockcod = 7 points per inch
Halibut = 5points per inch
Salmon = 5 points per inch
Cabezon = 8 points per inch
White Seabass = 3 points per inch
Barracuda = 3 points per inch
Surf Perch = 12 points per inch
Flounder = 10 points per inch
Greenling = 11 points per inch
Calico Bass = 7 points per inch
Sand Bass= 7 points per inch
Largemouth Bass = 8 points per inch
Smallmouth Bass = 10 points per inch
Spotted Bass= 10 points per inch
White Bass= 12 points per inch
Striped Bass = 6 points per inch
Catfish = 6 points per inch
Panfish = 13 points per inch
Trout = 7 points per inch

sounds fun,     it's on the honor system? or is it just fish caught during the monthly tournaments?

It is Honor system but there must be a pic with enough evidence of size.

I will work on a better example of what I am talking about this next week when I hit the river for a salmon...

1st pic should be of you and the fish on or with the kayak on the beach

2nd of the whole fish near a measuring devise

Third sould be a close up of the measurement so you can recieve full points for the fish down to the 1/4 of an inch

so this sand bass would be worth 145.25 in the tournament

Here is an example of how the points may look

So for 2011 id have 1759 points and im missing 7 species. Not bad but could be better toss in more then 6 days on the ocean and maybe my rockfish total would go up and ling size could have increased easily.

I love the idea. One question...do you get multiple entries of the same fish species or just the top for the individual fish throughout the year? Basically are we incentivising points or variety? Im in either way along with my wife too!
A bad day of fishing still beats a good day at work!

One fish per species but can upgrade that fish at any time.

So if ur biggest fish to date is 25 inch ling and u get a 32 tomorrow that will be ur new fish.

Hey guys is anyone else interested in doing this tournament. Could be a lot of fun and winner would be named Kayak Fisherman of the Year (KFY).
So who wants to be the first KFY?

Sounds like you have a good plan. The first thing I like is that we don't have sturgeons on the list. The larger ones are hard to catch, measure and safely release for us C & R guys (also I can't seem to ever catch one  :D ). The best idea though is having this a California tournament, not just location specific. So now if I'm heading up to some location in NCal my fish will still count. Same thing for a SCal trip. Anyway, with a $10 buy in I'll try it eventhough I'll probably only catch about half of the target species. It should be fun seeing what everyone else is catching.

Thinking making 3 different Categories, a grand total all your fish species, Saltwater total(including Salmon), and Freshwater total. A winner for each category.
